Ingredients

  •  pound (450g) of ground beef (or a mix of beef and pork)
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 ounces / 800g) of crushed tomatoes
  • 2 cans (6 ounces / 170g each) of tomato paste
  • 2 cups (480ml) of water
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon of dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon of dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 package (16 ounces / 450g) of lasagna noodles
  • 15 ounces (425g) of ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) of grated Parmesan cheese
  • 3 cups (720ml) of shredded mozzarella cheese

Direction

  1. Prepare the Meat Sauce:
    • In a large skillet or saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic, and sauté until softened.
    • Add the ground beef to the pan and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
    • Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, water, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for about 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
  2. Prepare the Cheese Mixture:
    • In a bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, and grated Parmesan cheese. Mix well until smooth and well combined.
  3. Cook the Lasagna Noodles:
    • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the lasagna noodles according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  4. Assemble the Lasagna:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • In a 9×13 inch baking dish, spread a thin layer of the meat sauce on the bottom.
    • Arrange a layer of lasagna noodles over the meat sauce, slightly overlapping them.
    • Spread a layer of the ricotta cheese mixture over the noodles.
    • Spoon a layer of the meat sauce over the ricotta mixture.
    • Sprinkle a layer of shredded mozzarella cheese over the meat sauce.
    • Repeat the layers: noodles, ricotta mixture, meat sauce, and mozzarella cheese, until all ingredients are used, ending with a layer of meat sauce and mozzarella cheese on top.
  5. Bake the Lasagna:
    • Cover the baking dish loosely with aluminum foil, making sure it’s tented so it doesn’t touch the cheese.
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.
    • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the edges are golden brown.
  6. Let it Rest:
    • Remove the lasagna from the oven and let it cool for about 15 minutes before slicing and serving. This allows it to set and makes it easier to slice neatly.
  7. Serve and Enjoy:
    • Serve the lasagna hot, garnished with additional grated Parmesan cheese and fresh basil if desired.
