Ingredients
- pound (450g) of ground beef (or a mix of beef and pork)
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 can (28 ounces / 800g) of crushed tomatoes
- 2 cans (6 ounces / 170g each) of tomato paste
- 2 cups (480ml) of water
- 2 tablespoons of olive oil
- 1 teaspoon of dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon of dried basil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 package (16 ounces / 450g) of lasagna noodles
- 15 ounces (425g) of ricotta cheese
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup (120ml) of grated Parmesan cheese
- 3 cups (720ml) of shredded mozzarella cheese
Direction
- Prepare the Meat Sauce:
- In a large skillet or saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic, and sauté until softened.
- Add the ground beef to the pan and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
- Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, water, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for about 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
- Prepare the Cheese Mixture:
- In a bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, and grated Parmesan cheese. Mix well until smooth and well combined.
- Cook the Lasagna Noodles:
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the lasagna noodles according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- Assemble the Lasagna:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a 9×13 inch baking dish, spread a thin layer of the meat sauce on the bottom.
- Arrange a layer of lasagna noodles over the meat sauce, slightly overlapping them.
- Spread a layer of the ricotta cheese mixture over the noodles.
- Spoon a layer of the meat sauce over the ricotta mixture.
- Sprinkle a layer of shredded mozzarella cheese over the meat sauce.
- Repeat the layers: noodles, ricotta mixture, meat sauce, and mozzarella cheese, until all ingredients are used, ending with a layer of meat sauce and mozzarella cheese on top.
- Bake the Lasagna:
- Cover the baking dish loosely with aluminum foil, making sure it’s tented so it doesn’t touch the cheese.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the edges are golden brown.
- Let it Rest:
- Remove the lasagna from the oven and let it cool for about 15 minutes before slicing and serving. This allows it to set and makes it easier to slice neatly.
