Ingredients

For the Salad:

  • 3 large ripe tomatoes (heirloom or beefsteak work well), sliced
  • 8 ounces fresh mozzarella cheese (preferably buffalo mozzarella), sliced
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves (whole or torn)
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar or balsamic glaze (optional for sweetness)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Direction

  1. Prepare the Tomatoes and Mozzarella:

    • Wash and slice the tomatoes into 1/4-inch thick slices. Arrange them in a circular pattern on a large platter or individual serving plates.
    • Slice the fresh mozzarella into rounds that are similar in thickness to the tomato slices. Layer the mozzarella slices alternately with the tomato slices on the plate.
  2. Add the Basil:

    • Tear the basil leaves into smaller pieces and scatter them over the top of the tomatoes and mozzarella. Alternatively, you can place whole leaves for a more rustic look.
  3. Season the Salad:

    • Drizzle the extra virgin olive oil evenly over the tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil.
    • Add the balsamic vinegar or balsamic glaze for a touch of sweetness and tang. If using balsamic vinegar, you can drizzle it sparingly, as it’s more potent than glaze.
    • Sprinkle the salad with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Be sure to season evenly for the best flavor.
  4. Optional Marinating:

    • If you have time, let the salad sit for about 5-10 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld together. The olive oil will begin to infuse the tomatoes and mozzarella, making the salad even more delicious.
  5. Serve:

    • Serve the Caprese Salad immediately as a refreshing appetizer or side dish. It’s perfect alongside grilled meats, seafood, or crusty bread.
