Ingredients
For the Salad:
- 3 large ripe tomatoes (heirloom or beefsteak work well), sliced
- 8 ounces fresh mozzarella cheese (preferably buffalo mozzarella), sliced
- 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves (whole or torn)
- 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar or balsamic glaze (optional for sweetness)
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
Direction
-
Prepare the Tomatoes and Mozzarella:
- Wash and slice the tomatoes into 1/4-inch thick slices. Arrange them in a circular pattern on a large platter or individual serving plates.
- Slice the fresh mozzarella into rounds that are similar in thickness to the tomato slices. Layer the mozzarella slices alternately with the tomato slices on the plate.
-
Add the Basil:
- Tear the basil leaves into smaller pieces and scatter them over the top of the tomatoes and mozzarella. Alternatively, you can place whole leaves for a more rustic look.
-
Season the Salad:
- Drizzle the extra virgin olive oil evenly over the tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil.
- Add the balsamic vinegar or balsamic glaze for a touch of sweetness and tang. If using balsamic vinegar, you can drizzle it sparingly, as it’s more potent than glaze.
- Sprinkle the salad with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Be sure to season evenly for the best flavor.
-
Optional Marinating:
- If you have time, let the salad sit for about 5-10 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld together. The olive oil will begin to infuse the tomatoes and mozzarella, making the salad even more delicious.
-
Serve:
- Serve the Caprese Salad immediately as a refreshing appetizer or side dish. It’s perfect alongside grilled meats, seafood, or crusty bread.
