Ingredients
- Lasagna noodles (about 12 sheets)
- 1 lb Italian sausage (mild or spicy, depending on your preference)
- 1 onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
- 2 teaspoons dried oregano
- 2 teaspoons dried basil
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 15 oz ricotta cheese
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- Fresh basil or parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Direction
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Noodles:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Cook the lasagna noodles according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- Cook the Sausage Mixture:
- In a large skillet or pan, cook the Italian sausage over medium heat until browned and cooked through, breaking it into small pieces with a spatula as it cooks.
- Add chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook until the onion is softened and translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Prepare the Tomato Sauce:
- Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer the sauce for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, to let the flavors meld together.
- Prepare the Cheese Mixture:
- In a medium bowl, mix together the ricotta cheese, egg, and grated Parmesan cheese until well combined.
- Assemble the Lasagna:
- Spread a thin layer of the tomato sauce mixture on the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Arrange a single layer of lasagna noodles over the sauce.
- Spread half of the ricotta cheese mixture over the noodles.
- Sprinkle with a third of the shredded mozzarella cheese.
- Spread a third of the remaining tomato sauce mixture over the cheese.
- Repeat the layers: noodles, ricotta mixture, mozzarella cheese, and tomato sauce.
- For the top layer, arrange the remaining noodles, spread the remaining tomato sauce mixture evenly over the noodles, and sprinkle with the remaining mozzarella cheese.
- Bake:
- Cover the baking dish loosely with aluminum foil (to prevent sticking, you can lightly grease the foil).
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
- Serve:
-
- Let the lasagna cool for about 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
- Garnish with chopped fresh basil or parsley, if desired.
