Ingredients

  • Lasagna noodles (about 12 sheets)
  • 1 lb Italian sausage (mild or spicy, depending on your preference)
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 15 oz ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Fresh basil or parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Direction

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Noodles:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Cook the lasagna noodles according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. Cook the Sausage Mixture:
    • In a large skillet or pan, cook the Italian sausage over medium heat until browned and cooked through, breaking it into small pieces with a spatula as it cooks.
    • Add chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook until the onion is softened and translucent, about 5 minutes.
  3. Prepare the Tomato Sauce:
    • Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer the sauce for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, to let the flavors meld together.
  4. Prepare the Cheese Mixture:
    • In a medium bowl, mix together the ricotta cheese, egg, and grated Parmesan cheese until well combined.
  5. Assemble the Lasagna:
    • Spread a thin layer of the tomato sauce mixture on the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking dish.
    • Arrange a single layer of lasagna noodles over the sauce.
    • Spread half of the ricotta cheese mixture over the noodles.
    • Sprinkle with a third of the shredded mozzarella cheese.
    • Spread a third of the remaining tomato sauce mixture over the cheese.
    • Repeat the layers: noodles, ricotta mixture, mozzarella cheese, and tomato sauce.
    • For the top layer, arrange the remaining noodles, spread the remaining tomato sauce mixture evenly over the noodles, and sprinkle with the remaining mozzarella cheese.
  6. Bake:
    • Cover the baking dish loosely with aluminum foil (to prevent sticking, you can lightly grease the foil).
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.
    • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  7. Serve:
    • Let the lasagna cool for about 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
    • Garnish with chopped fresh basil or parsley, if desired.
