Ingredients

For the Donuts:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)

For the Glaze (optional):

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Direction

  • Prepare the Dough:

    • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg.
    • In another bowl, combine the milk, eggs, vanilla extract, and melted butter. Mix well.
    • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix; the dough should be slightly sticky.
  • Roll and Cut the Donuts:

    • Turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Roll it out to about 1/2 inch thick.
    • Use a donut cutter or two round cookie cutters (one large and one small for the hole) to cut out the donuts. Gather and re-roll any scraps to make additional donuts.
  • Fry the Donuts:

    • In a deep pot or fryer, heat oil to 350°F (175°C). Carefully drop in the donuts, a few at a time, being careful not to overcrowd the pan.
    • Fry for about 1-2 minutes on each side, or until golden brown. Use a slotted spoon to remove the donuts and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.
  • Make the Glaze (optional):

    • In a bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Adjust the consistency by adding more milk or sugar as needed.
  • Glaze the Donuts:

    • While the donuts are still warm, dip the tops into the glaze, allowing excess to drip off. Place on a wire rack to let the glaze set.
  • Serve:

    • Enjoy your homemade donuts fresh! You can also sprinkle them with cinnamon sugar or top them with sprinkles if desired.
