Ingredients
For the Donuts:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)
For the Glaze (optional):
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2-3 tablespoons milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Direction
-
Prepare the Dough:
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg.
- In another bowl, combine the milk, eggs, vanilla extract, and melted butter. Mix well.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix; the dough should be slightly sticky.
-
Roll and Cut the Donuts:
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Roll it out to about 1/2 inch thick.
- Use a donut cutter or two round cookie cutters (one large and one small for the hole) to cut out the donuts. Gather and re-roll any scraps to make additional donuts.
-
Fry the Donuts:
- In a deep pot or fryer, heat oil to 350°F (175°C). Carefully drop in the donuts, a few at a time, being careful not to overcrowd the pan.
- Fry for about 1-2 minutes on each side, or until golden brown. Use a slotted spoon to remove the donuts and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.
-
Make the Glaze (optional):
- In a bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Adjust the consistency by adding more milk or sugar as needed.
-
Glaze the Donuts:
- While the donuts are still warm, dip the tops into the glaze, allowing excess to drip off. Place on a wire rack to let the glaze set.
-
Serve:
- Enjoy your homemade donuts fresh! You can also sprinkle them with cinnamon sugar or top them with sprinkles if desired.
