Joulutorttu Recipe: Finnish Christmas Pastries

Joulutorttu pastries are a traditional Finnish Christmas treat. They are made with puff pastry dough and filled with prune jam, which is a classic filling in Finnish holiday treats. The pastries are shaped into stars and baked until golden and flaky, then sprinkled with powdered sugar. This treat is commonly served during the holiday season, paired with hot beverages like coffee or mulled wine.

Ingredients

  • 1 package puff pastry (usually 8 squares)
  • 1/2 cup prune jam (or any jam of your choice)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • Powdered sugar (for dusting, optional)

Direction

  1. Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 400°F (200°C).

  2. Prepare Puff Pastry: Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface. If you’re using pre-made puff pastry, unroll it and cut it into squares (about 4-inch squares). You will need about 8 squares for 8 pastries.

  3. Shape the Pastries: To create the star shape, cut slits along each side of the square, leaving the center intact. Fold every other corner of the square towards the center, overlapping them slightly to form a star shape.

  4. Add the Filling: Place a small spoonful of prune jam (or any jam of your choice) in the center of each pastry.

  5. Egg Wash: Beat the egg in a small bowl and brush it lightly over the edges of the pastry to give it a golden finish when baked.

  6. Bake: Place the shaped pastries on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in the preheated oven for about 15–20 minutes or until the pastries are golden brown and puffed.

  7. Cool and Serve: Let the Joulutorttu cool on a wire rack for a few minutes. Once cooled, dust with powdered sugar for a festive touch, if desired.
