Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef or turkey (you can also use shredded chicken or a plant-based alternative)
  • 1 packet taco seasoning (or homemade, if preferred)
  • Taco shells (hard or soft; choose your preference)
  • Toppings (choose your favorites):
    • Shredded lettuce
    • Diced tomatoes
    • Shredded cheese (cheddar or Mexican blend)
    • Sour cream
    • Salsa
    • Avocado or guacamole
    • Jalapeños (sliced or pickled)
    • Chopped cilantro
    • Lime wedges (for squeezing on top)

Direction

  1. Prepare Your Ingredients:

    • Gather all your ingredients and toppings. Wash and chop any fresh produce (like tomatoes, lettuce, and cilantro) that you want to include.
  2. Cook the Meat:

    • In a large skillet, heat over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef or turkey to the skillet.
    • Use a spatula or wooden spoon to break the meat apart as it cooks. Stir occasionally to ensure even browning.
    • Cook until the meat is browned and no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes. If using turkey, it may take a bit less time.
  3. Drain Excess Fat:

    • If necessary, drain any excess fat from the cooked meat. This is especially important if you’re using beef, as it can release a lot of grease.
  4. Add Taco Seasoning:

    • Sprinkle the taco seasoning over the cooked meat. Add water according to the packet instructions (usually about 1/2 to 3/4 cup).
    • Stir to combine the seasoning with the meat and water.
    • Bring to a simmer and cook for an additional 3-5 minutes, stirring occasionally until the mixture thickens slightly and the meat is well-coated in seasoning.
  5. Prepare Taco Shells:

    • While the meat is simmering, prepare your taco shells according to the package instructions. If using hard shells, they usually need to be baked for a few minutes to crisp up. For soft tortillas, you can warm them in a skillet or microwave.
  6. Assemble the Tacos:

    • Once the meat is ready and taco shells are prepared, it’s time to assemble! Place the taco shells on a serving platter.
    • Use a spoon to fill each taco shell with the seasoned meat.
  7. Add Toppings:

    • Set out bowls of your desired toppings (lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, sour cream, salsa, etc.) for everyone to customize their tacos.
    • Encourage everyone to load their tacos as they like!
  8. Serve:

    • Serve the tacos immediately with lime wedges on the side for squeezing over the top, if desired.
    • Enjoy your Taco Night with chips and salsa, or a side salad!

Tips:

  • Make it a Fiesta: Consider adding sides like Mexican rice, beans, or chips with guacamole for a full meal.
  • Customize Your Seasoning: Adjust the spice level of your tacos by choosing mild or spicy taco seasoning or adding diced jalapeños to the meat mixture.
  • Vegetarian Option: Substitute the meat with black beans or lentils for a vegetarian taco night.
